Joe Strummer’s untimely death in December 2002 sent shockwaves around the world of music and beyond. Yet friends and family were determined that his spirit would live on. In this documentary, Grammy award-winning filmmaker Don Letts shows how Joe’s unique contribution to the music world is manifesting itself through a charity set up in his memory – Strummerville. The film features contributions from supporters and founders of the charity, including Billy Bragg (interviewed at Sheffield’s own Showroom Cinema) and Damien Hirst, plus wonderful footage of Strummer himself.

Following the screening there will be a Q&A with Beans On Toast and Trish Whelan director of the Strummerville charity. There will be live sets from Strummerville bands Smokey Angle Shades, Beans On Toast, The Riff Raff and Nimmo & The Gauntletts.

Music For Real Airports is a live art event, a unique audio and visual collaboration between musicians The Black Dog and Human design studio. Music For Real Airports responds to the reality of occupying the semi public space of an airport – and is a contemporary reply to Brian Eno’s seminal work in the 70s.

The Black Dog have developed the project from over 200 hours of field recordings from airports in an effort to explore the ideas and associations that people have with them today.Previously associated with club appearances/performances, The Black Dog will now bring a new live event to an art gallery environment.

This is a world premiere event on Saturday 24 April at Millennium Galleries and will then tour to art galleries around the world.

UPDATE – the legendary Richard H. Kirk (Cabaret Voltaire) will be Guest DJ at this event.

12 ANGRY MEN at Sheffield Law Courts

The defence and the prosecution have rested and the jury files into the jury room to decide if a young Spanish-American is guilty of murder. What seems like an open and shut case soon becomes a mini-drama of each of the jurors’ preconceptions about the accused and each other. The film is entirely set in the claustrophobic jury room on a hot summer’s day. Nigel and Klive Humberstone join forces with saxophonist Rob Skeet to create a complementary, minimal score to this classic courtroom drama.

Sensoria is renowned for taking events into unusual venues and this year we’re pleased to have gained access to Sheffield Law Courts for this unique presentation.

ISOMORPHISM AND TOTALITY

A programme of computer-generated, screen-based artworks exploring the relationships between sound, image and extreme temporality. Three artists (Mark Fell, Theo Burt and Ernest Edmonds) working with computational processes present a programme of works exploring exceptionally close correlations between digital sound synthesis, colour, geometry and time. The event includes rare high-definition and 8.1 surround sound versions of the works; and a lecture by the eminent computer artist and theorist Professor Ernest Edmonds.

Sensoria is delighted to announce the Yorkshire Music showcase at 02 Academy 2. The event is in association with Plugged In Yorkshire which launches this month.

The gig is a true South by West Yorkshire showcase – the line up includes:

SERIOUS SAM BARRETT – belts out heartfelt country blues on his 12 string resonator that could be from across the Atlantic but are actually totally grounded in Yorkshire.

OBLONG – Tracy Deakins’ deceptively powerful vocals front an immersive rock guitar sound from the band that are ‘generating more buzz than a swarm of bees’ NME.com

THE CROOKES – this fresh-faced indie group base formed at the University of Sheffield and base their lyrics on 60s kitchen sink dramas. A crowd-pleaser every time.

STANDARD FARE – named after a sign spotted on a bus, this guitar trio use girl-boy vocals to evoke lovelorn lyrics. Shared influences range from Fleetwood Mac to Rancid.

GRAMMATICS – combine cello-led grandeur with choral vocals to create art school pop with unashamed indulgence – add a dash of prog rock for good measure.

BRITISH SEA POWER LIVE SOUNDTRACK TO MAN OF ARAN

Sensoria is delighted to welcome special guests British Sea Power to perform their live soundtrack to Man of Aran for the festival’s closing night celebrations. Man of Aran is a powerful and provocative dramatised documentary from the late American filmmaker Robert J Flaherty. In a series of startling black-and-white sequences the film presents daily life on the inhospitable Aran islands on the west coast of Ireland. But Man Of Aran isn’t a straightforward documentary, it provides a blend of reality and staged elements.The fishing expedition for basking sharks, which forms the film’s dramatic heart, was based around methods that hadn’t been employed on the Aran Islands for decades. Pauline Kael described it as, “The greatest film tribute to man’s struggle against a hostile nature.”

“It’s a wonderful film,” says BSP guitarist Noble. “The images vary between huge drama and a brilliant kind of ridiculousness – check out the amazing foot-wide bobbled berets that the fishermen wear. It’s a great look, like a 1930s Irish version of Jack White or Kraftwerk. It’s a film that’s also relevant to the current era – a time when the idea of living a simpler life is in the air. The film shows something I’d like to think I could do, but know I never will.”
